Spain-Prior to SAS

We spent two nights in Girona, Spain. I loved this place—shoutout to Shawn and Kelly for recommending coming here, even if it was for a short time. We found our place we were staying which was right on the main street and up 4 flights of stairs and then it was one big room with lots of natural light and an amazing shower! We had dinner the evening we arrived—some delicious fresh seafood and then of course, gelato—or gelati is what it's called here. Then we had a lazy morning and went to have breakfast at this cafe Shawn and Kelly recommended—it was a biker friendly place and had delicious food—hmmmm, weird they liked it so much. Then we wandered around town crossing bridges looting at the basilica then my mom and I went inside Girona Cathedral—it was gorgeous. My dad left us and we had to go find him at the beginning of the wall that is around the town of Girona. Walking along that wall was such a highlight, especially when we reached the top and took in the panoramic views of the entire city—breathtaking! That night we had burgers for dinner and again—gelato on gluten free cones! Navigating gluten-free options has been a bit more challenging here than in the UK, but my mom and I are making it work.

We took a train from Girona to Barcelona and then a taxi from the station to our place. We’re staying in a little apartment near the Gothic Quarter. It has a very different vibe from Girona as a whole and the place we were staying in Barcelona was more secluded. We hit a grocery store, made some pasta, and watched a movie. My mom picked it out, thinking it was a psychological thriller, but it turned out to be a full-blown horror movie! Safe to say, it took me a while to fall asleep that night.

The next day was jam-packed. We started at Park Güell with a guided tour, then headed to La Sagrada Familia for another tour. Both were mind-blowing—how these places were created is beyond me. We followed it up with a visit to Casa Batlló, another one of Gaudí’s masterpieces, and finished with a quick look at the outside of Barcelona Cathedral. After seeing La Sagrada Familia, though, it’s hard not to compare everything else. Dinner that night? A completely gluten-free restaurant! The food was good, but not exactly life-changing. We ended the night doing laundry on our weird outdoor patio, which was...an experience.

The next day we woke up fairly early to go on a tour of Montserrat. It was a very good tour with a great tour guide. We then stopped at a gluten free bakery and got some lunch and then made our way back to our place. My mom and I then spent the next hour or so doing some planning and things like that and figuring out if there is anything we can do with my bags. I shipped my two duffle bags from home and they won’t get through customs because I have vitamins and over the counter medicine. So now we have to figure out if I should buy all new stuff or get my bags shipped again once they go back to the US and ship them to Lisbon, Portugal. We have to look at the prices and which one will be more cost efficient. Even though it may be more difficult I do wish to just have my bags as I do not need more clothes! That night we had a paella cooking class. We went to the market with the chef which was so cool because we did not even know this market was there and I’m glad we got to see it once. We went to a kitchen and that’s where we cooked the paella. I found out I really like sangria and also paella. I fell asleep at midnight and had a nice 4 hour nap before we headed to the airport to Amsterdam and once we got there we’re going to try to figure out my bags or if we have to go shopping.

Public transportation in all these cities are all different but fairly easy. I must say London has one of the best public transportation systems that makes it very easy. For such a big city it’s good as well as then there’s not all that foot traffic and traffic on the ground level. Barcelona has been easy but there are warnings everywhere about pick pocketing and the system is not as connected as the one in London.
